First Workshop of the Workers' Pastoral Care

First Workshop of the Pastoral Care of Work

Wednesday, August 26 - 7:00 pm -8:30 pm

Workshop “Christian Leadership: Characteristics, Life Implications, and Challenges”

Dear sisters and brothers,

“Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16)

The workshop “Christian Leadership: Characteristics, Life Implications, and Challenges” invites participants to discover and strengthen their call to serve by following the example of Jesus Christ. Through reflections on humility, service, love, integrity, and wisdom, we will explore how Christian leadership transforms our family life, workplace, community, and Church.

We will also examine the challenges Christian leaders face in today's world and the spiritual tools needed to overcome them with faith, perseverance, and hope. This workshop seeks to form committed disciples who contribute to the spiritual and human growth of our community of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, our city of West Valley City, and our Diocese of Salt Lake City.

We are all waiting for you with open arms. May God bless you.

First Workshop of the Pastoral Care of Work & Workers

Christian Leadership: Summary of the Four Themes

  1. Characteristics of Christian leadership. Humility, service, love, integrity, and wisdom are its essential qualities.
  2. In family life and marriage. With God as the foundation of the home, family leadership encompasses the responsibilities of husband and wife, communication, and the formation of children (Joshua 24:15; Ephesians 5:25-28; Proverbs 31:10-31; Ephesians 4:29; Deuteronomy 6:6-7).
  3. In daily life. Christian leadership is lived out in the workplace, the community, and the Church.
  4. Challenges and overcoming them. Its challenges include pride, the pursuit of recognition, pressure to act contrary to the Gospel, a lack of commitment or cooperation, and the fatigue that comes with service.
  5. Overall summary: the four themes connect a leader’s qualities with family responsibilities, involvement in society and the Church, and the challenges encountered in serving others.

Short Version

  • Learn the Church’s teaching on the dignity of work.
  • Promote respect and justice for all workers.
  • Understand workers’ rights and responsibilities.
  • Reflect on current workplace challenges.
  • Encourage Christian leadership and solidarity in the workplace.

How Can I Apply These Goals in Daily Life?

1. See work as a vocation, not just a job

  • Perform tasks with honesty, competence, and gratitude.
  • Remember that every legitimate job has dignity because it serves others. [vatican.va], [usccb.org]

2. Respect the dignity of every worker

  • Treat coworkers, employees, supervisors, custodians, and service workers with respect.
  • Avoid gossip, discrimination, or exploitation.
  • Recognize the value of people over productivity. [usccb.org], [vatican.va]

3. Practice justice in the workplace

  • Advocate for fair treatment and safe working conditions.
  • Pay workers fairly when you employ others.
